Varicose veins and Spider Veins

By Dr. Perviz Alidina & Dr. Zahra Alidina

Varicose veins are enlarged veins which may be blue, red or flesh coloured. They usually look like cords and appear tortuous and bulging. They can be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. They are often found on the thighs, backs of calves, or the insides of the leg.

Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles. They are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles. Spider veins can also be found on the face. It's estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem. People often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms, such as aching, heaviness, itching and night cramps. Spider veins can be treated effectively with appropriate technology. At Dermaspa all vein treatments are performed by our physicians Dr. Zahra Alidina and Dr. Perviz Alidina.

Spider veins usually take on one of three forms:

  • They may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point.
  • They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches on a tree
  • They may be in a linear pattern that appears as thin separate lines

Spider veins can be caused by many factors. These include:

  • Increasing age. With age the valves in the veins get weaker and do not work as well.
  • Hormonal changes. These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medications containing estrogen and progesterone may also increase the chances of developing varicose and spider veins.
  • Genetic predisposition. About half the people who have varicose veins have a family history of varicose veins.
  • Occupation involving prolonged standing or sitting.
  • Obesity. Being overweight or obese puts extra stress on your veins and increases the likelihood of developing varicose and spider veins.
  • Sun exposure. This can cause spider veins on the cheeks and the nose.
  • Varicose veins appear most commonly on the legs due to the pressure of the body weight, force of gravity, and the task of carrying the blood from the legs to the heart.

How Are Spider Veins Treated

Spider veins are treated with life-style modification and medical treatment. Treatment can:

  • Relieve symptoms such as aching or throbbing or cramping pain and heaviness and leg fatigue
  • Improve appearance.

Treatment Of Spider Veins

Dermaspa Laser and Skin Rejuvenation clinic offers treatments of spider veins. Dr Zahra Alidina and Dr Perviz Alidina effectively treat unsightly veins with both laser treatments and sclerotherapy injections. The appropriate treatment modality is chosen and utlilized by the DermaSpa Doctors based on the size of the veins.

At Dermaspa Laser and Skin Rejuvenation clinic, we use the gold standard Nd-yag long pulsed Cutera Xeo laser for treating spider and facial veins. Our Intense Pulsed Light Treatments (Limelight) and our Cutera Genesis Lasers are also very effective in the treatment of facial veins. Limelight and Genesis treatments are also an excellent option to improve generalized redness and dilated blood vessels seen in patients who suffer from a chronic facial condition called rosacea.
At Dermaspa MD Laser Clinic in Pickering, Dr. Zahra Alidina and Dr. Perviz Alidina prefer to treat the spider veins with lasers, if the veins are less than 3 mm in diameter. With laser treatment there are no incisions or needles. However, for veins between 3-4mm, sclerotherapy is the appropriate mode of treatment.

Laser Treatment For Spider Veins

Laser treatments usually last 15-25 minutes. Generally, 2-3 treatments are needed to remove spider veins in the legs. There is no downtime, so you can return to normal activity right after treatment.
The laser targets the blood in the blood vessel causes it to coagulate collapsing the targeted vein. The body then repairs the area and absorbs the coagulated blood vessel.
During the treatment the surrounding skin is protected by our state-of-the-art integrated cooling hand piece. By cooling the treated skin, we optimize the comfort and safety of the treatment.
During laser treatment, laser energy is directed to the veins, collapsing them and ideally eliminating them. Bruising often occurs in the area treated with laser and lasts for a few weeks. Lasers are especially suited to treat smaller spider veins when a needle cannot be used because of the size.
Other vascular imperfections that we treat at Dermaspa with Nd-Yag laser are:

  • Telangiectasia; These appear as fine red lines visible on the surface of the skin. These are most commonly found around the nose and the cheeks.
  • Cherry angiomas :These are a conglomeration of dilated capillaries and look like raised moles but are red or ruby coloured.

The advantage of laser treatment for all the above conditions is that it is non-invasive. No needles are required, and there is no downtime with the procedure.

Sclerotherapy For Spider Veins

A common form of treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy. This is an in-office procedure where veins are gently injected with a solution, causing the veins to collapse and fade from view. The procedure typically improves not only the cosmetic appearance but associated symptoms as well.
A few sclerotherapy sessions may be required to obtain maximum benefit. During sclerotherapy, the affected leg is elevated to drain blood, and the sclerosant (injection solution) is injected into the spider vein.
The procedure normally takes 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how many spider veins are treated. You may need repeated sessions and many injections per session depending on the extent of the spider veins and type of sclerosant used.

FAQ’S For Spider Vein Removal:

Q. How does laser work to remove spider veins?

A. Laser targets the blood in the vein and causes the blood to coagulate. This makes the veins to slowly fade and disappear.

Q. What type of laser is best for vein treatment?

A. Most effective laser is Nd-Yag laser. At DermaSpa MD laser and skin rejuvenation clinic, Dr. Zahra Alidina and Dr. Perviz Alidina treat spider veins with Cutera xeo Nd-Yag laser.

Q What do I expect right after treatments?

A.Right after treatment, spider veins often disappear immediately or may appear darker. These are both expected occurrences. Usually it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the body to clear and eliminate these veins.

Q. Is laser vein removal permanent?

A. Yes, spider vein removal is permanent. However, people who are prone to developing spider veins may develop new veins.

Q. What do I expect immediately after treatment?

A. You may notice some bruising, local swelling, and some tenderness in the treated area.

Q. What are we to do and not to do after treatment?

A. Avoid use of hot tubs, saunas, and physical exertion for 2 to3 weeks. Wearing support hose right after treatment for 2 to 3 days may help with healing and swelling.
All the patients are advised to stop taking any blood thinners such as aspirins, any anti-inflammatories and other products like vitamin E and any herbal products that may increase bleeding time one week prior to and one week post treatment.
At Derma spa MD laser and skin rejuvenation clinic all the patients have a consultation with Dr. Zahra Alidina or Dr. Perviz Alidina prior to treatment. At the time of the consultation patients are given all the information about the procedure and post care instructions.

Q. How many treatments are required to remove the veins?

A. Usually 2 to 3 treatments are sufficient. However the number of treatments may vary depending on the severity of the condition.

For Women & Men of All Skin Tones and Types

Now men and women alike are making unsightly facial and leg veins a thing of the past, thanks to the Cutera Excel. No more painful injections! With the most advanced technology, a unique design, and a longer wavelength, the Cutera Excel can safely and effectively treat both tiny superficial face veins and deeper blue leg veins on men and women of all skin tones.

The Cutera Excel difference.

The Cutera Excel combines the ideal laser wavelength with the most flexible parameters to deliver a superior vascular laser system. It treats a broad range of vessels from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly, safely, and effectively. Patients with dark, light or tanned skin can experience outstanding results with minimal bruising or blistering.

How does Excel Vein Therapy work?

The Cutera Excel systems deliver pulses of light energy which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin's surface, where it should be.

How many treatments will I need?

Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, color, and size of the vessels being treated. Since individual results vary, ask your medical professional about your specific condition.

Do the treatments hurt?

Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the handpiece. Although no local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, many patients opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.

What are the possible side effects?

Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience bruising and, in rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.

When will I see results?

Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed with the Cutera Excel.
