Treatment for Excessive Sweating - not just a summer problem!

on Friday, 11 July 2014. Posted in Dermaspa Blog

Do you or someone you know suffer from excessive sweating?  It could be Hyperhidrosis - a disorder which causes focal areas of abnormal sweating.  The most common areas to be affected are the underarms, palms, soles of the feet, and face.  Of course some people have other areas that are affected such as the groin.

In patients with hyperhidrosis, the body's mechanism for producing sweat is highly overactive.  It can be an embarrassing issue leading to social anxiety, trouble in job interviews, self esteem issues and issues in relationships.

Hyperhidrosis affects approximately 3% of the population:  If you suffer from this condition you are not alone, and treatments are available.

How do you know if you have Hyperhidrosis?

There are two types of hyperhidrosis:  Focal and Generalized.  If you are suffering from one or two areas of excessive sweating (focal) and you have suffered from focal visible excessive sweat for at least 6 months, you may have Focal Hyperhidrosis.

Take this hyperhidrosis quiz developed by Dr. Dee Anna Glaser and published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology in 2004.  If you answer "yes" to at least two of the following questions, you should book a consultation with us for Focal Primary Hyperhidrosis diagnosis and treatment options:

  1. You sweat similar amounts on both sides of your body (ie your sweat is bilateral and symmetrical)
  2. Your excessive sweating limits your daily activities
  3. You experience at least one episode of excessive sweating per week.
  4. You started experiencing excessive sweating by the age of 25
  5. You have a family history of excessive sweating
  6. You stop sweating when you are sleeping.

There are treatment options for Hyperhidrosis.

Many patients who suffer from hyperhidrosis have already tried every anti-perspirant available.  However, there are some clinical strength anti-perspirants available over the counter, such as Drysol.  This is worth a try.

If these are not working, Botox Therapeutic treatment may be an option for you.

Botox for hyperhidrosis is often covered by insurance plans, once your medical consultation determines your diagnosis and best treatment option (book a consultation for this).  Tiny injections of Botox Therapeutic under the skin dramatically reduce sweating for 7-9 months or longer.  We perform these treatments at DermaSpa.  Our expert physicians are members of the International Hyperhidrosis Society and perform these treatments gently and comfortably.
