Summer is here and this is the perfect time to revisit your skin care! ·I wanted to focus on rosacea skin care, as rosacea patients are especially sun sensitive. ·

Here are some summer skin care tips for people with rosacea, redness and visible facial veins:

  1. BE GENTLE! Choose a gentle cleanser that is non irritating.  If your skin is dry pick a cream cleanser without active ingredients.  If your skin is oily, pick a gentle cleanser that is water based.  Some of our clinic top picks for rosacea cleansers are:  Grace+Power Gentle Cleanser and the Grace+Power Milk Cleanser.
  2. PIMPLES BEWARE! If you have rosacea skin with pimples (acne rosacea) you may benefit from a deeper cleansing with mild alpha hydroxy acids.  Ensure your cleanser has NO microbeads or scrubs!  We like the Alyria Clarifying Cleanser for this skin type.
  3. AVOID SCRUBS! Always avoid scrubs, exfoliants and irritants in your cleansers  and skin care.  We do not recommend harsh physical exfoliants for rosacea skin.  We also recommend avoiding deep cleansing brushes such as the Clarisonic.
  4. DON'T FORGET THE ANTIOXIDANTS!  Topical antioxidants are very important for all skin types, but especially for rosacea skin.  Antioxidants have been proven to prevent DNA damage from the sun, when used with a broad spectrum sunblock.  They have also been proven to help with retaining skin moisture, improving skin texture and evening skin tone.  Our favorite antioxidant comes in a potent but moisturizing serum:  The VitaminC+E+Ferulic Serum (Grace+Power) and should always be used under your sunscreen for best results.  This gentle yet effective serum packs a serious antioxidant punch - three antioxidants in high concentrations, blended in a soothing, hyaluronic acid based serum for optimal skin balancing moisture.
  5. BE SUN SAFE!  Of course we recommend a broad spectrum sunblock for all our rosacea patients.  In fact, for all our patients period!  However, it is very important to ensure you reapply your sunblock every two hours while exposed to the sun, or after swimming or perspiration.  Additionally we recommend seeking shade between the hours of 10am-4pm when the sun is at its most damaging.  Our favorite sunblock for rosacea skin types are:  Rosaclear sunblock by Obagi Medical, Alyria SPF 45 sunscreen or TiZo SPF 35 for ultra sensitive skin.
  6. BE INFORMED!  No matter what your skin type, it is important to be informed about your skin.  We recommend a Visia Skin Analysis for all our patients, in order to better understand each individual patient's skin.  This analysis shows us your skin at and beneath the surface, pinpointing areas where we can improve on skin care, and sun damage.  For more on this complimentary analysis click here:  Visia Skin Analysis
