Retinol products are derived from vitamin A. Retinol is a very effective active ingredient and works to protect the skin from free radicals. Additionally retinols work to increase skin cell turnover, exfoliate the skin, generate cell growth, and repair cell damage.

Retinoids such as retinol are some of the only substances that are small enough to penetrate the outer layers of the skin. With effective penetration, retinoids can act at the lower epidermal layer where collagen and elastin reside.

Retinoids have very crucial functions during cell development. In the skin, they work to reset cell turnover and reduce the ‘stickiness’ of the cells in the pores. This makes it harder for pores to get clogged. Retinoids also reduce sebum activity which reduces acne.

While retinoids can be irritating for some people’s skin, when used properly, almost anyone can tolerate retinol. There are retinol products available over the counter and stronger ones available only by prescription. Some of these prescription retinoids have a variety of other names such as Tretinoin, Differin, Dapsone and Tazoarac.

No matter what skin type you are, and what strength or version of retinol you have, it is always good to start by using only twice a week. Some people can build up skin tolerance over a few months to use it every other day, but few people can tolerate to use it daily. Retinol should be applied to dry skin. Unlike other products where a wet and damp base is better, it works best on dry skin.

It is important to note that retinoid use will increase sun sensitivity, so please ensure you use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily.
